END OF 2014 / GIROLLE PICKING

GIROLLE PICKING - ANGDOO.COM/BLOG

Mattie and I spent our Christmas holiday with Mattie’s family in the South of France. In between many Christmas lunches and dinners full of oysters, foie gras, meat, bûche de Noël and me trying to speak French, we squeezed in one of my favorite activities – girolle picking.

Girolle or chanterelle is the most loved mushroom in France. Girolle picking sort of became our regular activity whenever we visit Mattie’s dad. He knows some secret spots in the forest, and he is also a master of finding these rare mushrooms.

Sometimes we don’t find any and sometimes we find a lot, but either way I love it.

To be honest, I’m not a good mushroom hunter (yet). Often, Mattie’s dad or Mattie spot them and point them to me. Then I get very excited to pick them like a little kid : ) It still puzzles me how anyone can spot a tiny golden thing in between all these fallen leaves.

I also get distracted by other things I find, like this giant mushroom.
