It snowed in Paris this week! It properly snowed on the second day that the snow stayed on roofs, balconies, my outside plants, streets, everywhere. Such a rare view! It made recent freezing cold weather worthwhile.

We had some friends visiting us this week, and one of them a Brazilian, who has never seen snow in her life. She made a snowman on our balcony with bare hands and she didn’t seem to mind the cold at all. I can only imagine how she could have felt when she saw and touched the snow for the first time. It must have been magical.

At midnight, we all ran out of the house to see the sparkling Eiffel towel under the snow. We were a little late so we only saw the last few seconds of the sparkle, but it was beautiful to see Trocadero all white and empty. There was a dog being wild in the snow, and I wished I were a dog too. Then of course our outing turned into an epic snow fight, and I’m sure I had as much fun as that dog.

As soon as I moved to Paris several years ago, Paris no longer became a cliché most-romantic-city-in-the-world to me as I uncovered its raw and rough face, which in truth I prefer. But when it is covered in white white fluffy snow at midnight with the Eiffel towel as the backdrop with no tourist around, yes, Paris is the most romantic city in the world.

THOUGHTS / PARIS - angdoo.com/blog

Whenever I come out of the metro stop next to my house, I rarely look at the Eiffel tower. Half because I don’t romanticize it and other half because I don’t want to look like a tourist (which I probably do anyways).

Four days after.. in the metro I stared at everyone and wondered about their thoughts. I wondered if they are as confused as I am. I am ever more confused about the world we live in, about us the humans, about The Earth and its significance in the context of the universe and about facebook. I’ve always part-jokingly and part-sincerely dreamed of being an astronaut. Now, more than ever, I wish I were so I can exit this place.

Last evening when I got out of the metro, I looked at the Eiffel tower. And for a while. Then I felt a little at home in Paris, where I never felt at home for the past four years.

Maybe listening to this is just making me overly sentimental.

This past weekend, our house was full with friends visiting. When there are many people around you, it feels like the time passes that much faster.

Our Saturday ended very late (or I should say very early), so when Sunday came around, we weren’t too motivated to go painting as we originally had planned a few days ago. But we finally pulled ourselves together towards the afternoon and went painting. Some painted and some didn’t, and we rushed towards the end that the sun was starting to set. Even though the day was tough and tiring, it is always a good fun to paint with Moderne Jazz crew : )

At Trocadéro roundabout, there’s an extremely tall and long stone wall. For the past three years I lived in Paris, I wondered what was behind the wall. Finally, I decided to walk against the wall and look for an entrance. I finally came to an entrance, and I was very surprised at my finding. It was a cemetery! I’ve never imagined nor have heard of anyone talking about a cemetery at Trocadéro. I walked in of course.

When I first traveled around France, one thing which exceptionally impressed me was the cemeteries. They had so much more character than those well planned cemeteries in the States. It is also interesting how one family shares one grave by stacking the coffins under a tomb or a mausoleums.

Compared to Pere-Lachaise, the most well known cemetery in Paris where tourists can have a guided tour, this place was completely empty. While I was walking around the cemetery, I almost forgot that I was in Paris. I was at Trocadéro, the most visited place in Paris by tourists, yet I didn’t see a single tourist here.

I sat down on a bench for a while and enjoyed the rare calmness. Then I was happy to have found this secret place for myself : )

walk-1

It was close to 4pm and haven’t eaten anything yet, which happens rather often. I stepped out of the house in hunger to grab something or anything to eat. I live in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, which is crowded by fancy restaurants. It is a challenge to find a simple, quick and cheap grab except McDo. So I decided to walk on the smaller streets I’ve never walked on around the neighborhood, hoping I’ll run into something simple, quick and cheap. But instead of food, I ran into many other things which distracted me from hunting down for food.

walk-2

I ran into a pile of thrown away stuff. It looked like someone’s moving and emptying out the house. Often, people leave their ‘trash’ on the streets so others can grab what they need from the pile. There are treasures you can find within these piles, and I always have a quick look. And look! A painting of a bird on a canvas! This came home with me : )

Then I ran into some gigantic handsome leaves with a furry texture. Does anyone know the name?

And this bleached look on these leaves!

Oh, I ran into one boulangerie and found myself a sandwich at the end. Hope you are enjoying your day too.
